Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) is a fruit tree species that belongs to the Lauraceae family. It originates from a vast geographical area that stretches from Mexico to Guatemala, and exte the Pacific coast. Now it’s also cultivated in other areas of the world.
The name “avocado” comes from the Aztec word, "ahuacatl", which means testicle and refers to the shape of that organ. It later became aguacate in Spanish, and then in English and Italian, “avocado.”
Avocado is mostly used in many dishes of the South American cuisine. Since it’s a very oily fruit rich in vitamins, its oil is extracted and used in the cosmetic field.
